Homemade Bone Broth Bouillon

The internet has been taken over with pictures of coffee, tea, and bone broth... you name it. Coffee and tea are great, they each have their own health benefits if sourced and made properly, but my favorite cozy "energy" drink is bone broth.

Drinking bone broth is a pleasant way to enjoy the savory flavor and get a boost of energy from the fat and protein it contains without having to eat a bowl of soup...although that works too!
Sometimes I drink tea, sometimes green tea, sometimes matcha tea, sometimes decaf coffee, sometimes normal coffee...but all these things contain some amount of caffeine and that's where bone broth comes in.

Health Benefits

  • Bone broth contains l-glutamine which helps to keep the small intestine working in tip-top shape. When we don't take time to calm ourselves down and get into parasympathetic mode (calm) before eating (think, standing, or driving while eating or continually getting up during a meal) our brain won't get a chance to tell our stomach to produce acid to break down food.  These partially un-digested proteins get pushed into the small intestines and poke holes in the soft tissues. This is how we get leaky gut.  Thankfully the small intestine is always regenerating if we give it the right nutrients.  The L-glutamine in bone broth is great for small intestine regeneration.
  • If you make bone broth from pasture raised animals, the fat in the broth is great for supplying you with brain and body building fat soluble energy as well as long lasting slow burning energy.
  • Contains- When you simmer down bones, collagen and gelatin are released into the broth. Collagen is the nutrient used to build your soft tissue like your hair, skin, and nails. Collagen also helps repair ligaments and tendons which can help ease inflammation and pain.

This morning I flavored my bone broth with a homemade boullion mix. The Base of the mix is nutritional yeast which is a great sources of B vitamins.

Here's the recipe...

Homemade Beef Boullion Powder

1 Cup Nutritional Yeast
3 TBS Onion Powder
2 TBS Mineral Salt (such as celtic sea salt or pink Himalayan salt)
1 TBS Garlic Powder
1 1/2 tsp Dried Thyme
1 tsp Dried Sage
1 tsp Paprika Powder
1/2 tsp Turmeric
2 tsp Dried Parsley
1 tsp Gelatin Powder

  • Option #1 : Put all the Ingredients in the blender and blend till all the spices are powdered together. Store boullion mix in a mason jar with the lid securely on.
  • Option #2 : Don't bother blending and just throw all the spices in a jar and shake! You're Done!

When you warm up a mug of broth, add 2-3 tsp of boullion powder to taste or a few tablespoons for a pot of soup.
If you have never made bone broth before, the process is super simple, give it a google to learn how!

This recipe is my version of a recipe found in the Trim Healthy Mama Cookbook.
