Healing face wash (acne series part 5)

Healing face wash that is good enough to eat

When I was a young teenager and acne was a constant battle I searched for DIY face washes that would actually help.  After much reading I picked up on the fact that certain foods have special qualities that can help your body in different ways.  For instance, I learned that…

  • Coconut oil has antibacterial properties, which is good for acne,
  • Raw honey is also an antibacterial substance
  • Oats are anti inflammatory and therefore help with the redness of acne
  • Cinnamon helps with inflammation as well as unclogs skin pores.
  • Nutmeg has been used in skin care for a long time, helps reduce irritation and inflammation as well as promotes hydration and a smooth appearance of the skin and reduces marks of acne scars.

After learning all of this I started to experiment putting together my own homemade face washes.  I use oats as a base, added in spices and used the honey to stick it all together to create a gooey mask that makes you look very attractive while washing your face….ok not really but your skin will be radiant if you take the time to take care of it.

Anti-inflammatory healing face wash:

A note on spices - A little goes a long way with spices, too much cinnamon and nutmeg can burn or irritate your skin.  Start with a small amount and add more if you feel you need it.  The purpose of this face wash is to soothe your skin and gently heal it.  We are not looking to dry out your skin or cause any kind of stinging or burning sensation.

Make up your face wash and mix a small portion with honey as if you were going to wash your face, and apply it to the inside of your wrist.  Leave for ten minutes before washing off.  If the skin on your wrist has any sort of aggravation or burning you know that you have too much spice in your mix or cinnamon and nutmeg might not be the best spices to use on your skin.

Everyone is different, experiment till you find how much spices or what spices are right for you!

Ingredients:
1/2 cup oats (blended into a powder in a food processor)
1/8 tsp of cinnamon
1/8tsp nutmeg
1/2-1 tsp of honey whenever you wash your face

Mix the oat flour and spices together and store in a container in your bathroom. When you are ready to wash your face, take a few tablespoons of the mix in the palm of your hand and add 1/2 tsp of honey and a little bit of water, mix around with a finger till it is somewhat pasty and won't run right off your face.  Spread onto your face and leave for 2-3 minutes.  At first you do not want to leave this on long until you know whether or not your combination of spices is right. Leaving the face wash on for a longer period of time will draw too much moisture out of your skin. Drying out your skin is not the goal.  Rinse face wash with warm water being carful not to scrub your skin.  Repeat once or twice a week.

This concludes my blog post series on acne!  If you have read all the post you now have an understanding of how your diet, digestion and gut health, blood sugar regulation and what you apply on your skin have an effect on your skins health and acne.

Healing for your skin takes place from the inside out.  Start taking baby steps towards a better diet and higher quality food options while working on what you use for skin hygiene and you should see results along the way.
